Privacy policy

Anonymous by design · v2026-07-05

UnitWise is built to be anonymous and to hold minimal to zero personal information. You use a username you choose; you never have to tell us who you are.

Health (special category) data

Information about your drinking relates to your health, which UK/EU data-protection law treats as “special category” data. We only process it to run the tracker for you, on the basis of your explicit consent, which you can withdraw at any time by deleting your data or your account.

What we store
A username you choose
Your public handle. It need not identify you and should not be your real name.
A password
Stored only as a secure hash (Argon2id); never in plain text.
An optional email
Only if you choose to add one. Used for password recovery, an optional weekly summary, and (if you enable it) email-based two-factor codes. Stored privately, never shown to anyone (including admins), and never used for marketing. Note: adding an email, and especially using email 2FA, reduces your anonymity, because messages pass through email providers that can see who you are. Passkey or authenticator-app 2FA keep you anonymous.
Your drink & dry-day log
The entries you record: drink type, size, ABV, units, calories, price, time, and any note or venue you add.
Your settings
Preferences like day-start, currency, budgets and automations.
Venues & drinks you add
Only shared to the community database if you explicitly opt in.
Your plan & subscription status
Whether you are on Free or Plus, and any expiry, for billing only.
An activity audit
A private log of your own actions (what/when) so you can review your history; admins can review system activity by username for safety and support.
Connections you create
Sponsor, organisation and friend links you set up yourself.
Technical security data
The IP address and time of your sign-ins and requests, kept to detect and prevent abuse (spam, fraud, attacks). We never use it to profile or track you, but be aware an IP address can in principle be linked back to you by your internet provider or by law enforcement, so it is not perfectly anonymous. We keep it only as long as needed for security.
What we never collect
  • Your real name, address or phone number
  • Your GPS location or location history, the app does not track where you go
  • Advertising identifiers or third-party trackers
  • Any biometric or health-record data beyond what you type in
  • We never sell or rent your data to anyone
How long we keep it

We keep your data only while your account exists. Delete your account and it is erased. Backups roll off shortly afterwards. Anonymous, aggregated statistics may be retained.
